Brief information about Uluguru Mountains

The Uluguru Mountains are a group of mountains in Tanzania’s east that create an arc. The Eastern Arc is a mountain range that runs from Kenya to Tanzania, from northeast to southwest. The Luguru tribe, a Bantu-speaking people that live in the area surrounding these mountains and hills, gave these mountains their name. The Uluguru Mountains’ main ridge runs roughly north-south and reaches an elevation of around 2,630 meters (8,600 feet) at its highest point. On the main Uluguru range, 50 settlements border the forest, and roughly 151,000 people reside within the mountain area, with populations increasing as they approach the forest boundary at higher altitudes.

The Uluguru main ridge and neighboring areas feature a diverse plant life. Dryer lowland coastal forest environments, transitional rainforests, sub-montane, montane, and higher montane forest types, as well as sub-montane, montane, and upper montane forest types, are all included.

The Uluguru mountains receive rainwater from the Indian Ocean, making the east-facing slopes exceedingly wet, with annual rainfall estimated to be above 3,000 millimeters (120 in) with rain falling every month.

The Ulugurus’ native population is the Waluguru tribe. They have moved from other parts of Tanzania and have lived in the mountains for hundreds of years. Unlike other tribes in Tanzania, where males control the land and make the majority of decisions about its usage and administration, their land is passed down through the female line, and women hold significant power in village life.

The name “Luguru” refers to the “people of the highlands.” Waluguru are mountain people who, tradition has it, once fought the zigua. When Zigua defeated Luguru, he moved from the lower ground to the mountains. Their principal activity is cultivation. Among the crops they grow are bananas, yams, cassava, and millet.
