Is Rwanda Suitable for Self Drive?
For most travellers, yes. Rwanda is small, around two to three hours separate Kigali from Akagera, Musanze or Huye, and the principal highways are paved. The challenge is not distance but terrain: steep, winding mountain roads in the north and west and sandy or black cotton soil tracks in the parks. Add heavy rain between March and May and again in October and November, and a capable 4×4 becomes a matter of comfort and confidence rather than luxury.
Who Can Rent a Car and Drive in Rwanda?

Rwanda Road Conditions for Self-Drive
Main Roads
Rwanda’s main arteries, including Kigali to Musanze, Huye, and Rubavu, are tarmac and generally in good condition. Speed bumps and sudden changes in gradient are frequent, and some stretches carry heavy truck traffic.
Rural Roads
Secondary roads vary from smooth tarmac to compacted earth. Expect potholes after rain and occasional washouts.
Mountain Roads
The north and west are steep. Roads between Musanze, Rubavu, Karongi, and Nyungwe wind through hills with sharp bends, drop-offs, and mist. Drive slowly, lower your gear on descents, and keep to your side.
Roads Around National Parks
Inside Akagera, tracks are gravel, sand, and black cotton soil. Near Volcanoes, the approach to the park headquarters is paved, but the final stretches to trailheads can be rough volcanic stone. Nyungwe’s main road is paved but narrow and often foggy.
Roads During the Rainy Season
The long rains fall roughly from March to May, and the short rains in October and November. Landslides and slick clay can affect hill roads, and Akagera’s tracks become soft. Please allow extra time, carry a recovery kit, and feel free to ask us about current conditions before you leave.
Driving at Night
We advise against it, and our contract prohibits it. Unlit cyclists, pedestrians, animals, and trucks make night driving risky, and damage from driving outside permitted hours is the hirer’s liability.

Self Drive Rwanda for Chimpanzee
Chimpanzee Tracking
Where the gorillas live among bamboo in volcanoes National Park, the chimpanzees belong to the oldest rainforest in the country. Nyungwe is a vast, mist-hung forest in the southwest, and tracking its chimpanzees is a quieter, steeper, and more private encounter. The permit is far smaller than a gorilla permit, but it is limited in number and sells out in the busy months. Recent published figures put it at about USD 150 per person per trek for international visitors, with older sources quoting lower amounts; some sources also list park entry separately. The reported minimum age is 16, and only about two dozen permits are issued each day. Nyungwe is managed by Nyungwe Management Company (African Parks), so confirm the price, age rule, and booking process directly (nyungwe@africanparks.org) before you commit. Self-Drive to Nyungwe National Park
From Kigali, drive south through Muhanga to Huye (about 130 km, 2.5 hours), then continue about 100 km to the forest (2 to 2.5 hours); the whole journey is roughly 220 km and five to six hours. The road is paved and passes right through the forest, but it is narrow, winding, and often shrouded in fog. The park’s activities take place on foot, so you drive to the visitor center or trailhead and leave your vehicle there. Do not attempt the full drive and a tracking trek on the same day.
Where to Stay Before Chimpanzee Tracking
Sleep at or near the forest the night before. Options include lodges inside and around Nyungwe, guesthouses at Gisakura and Kitabi, and designated campsites, which you should confirm and book with the park in advance. Many self-drive travellers break the journey with a night in Huye, finishing the drive the following afternoon. A rooftop tent on a Land Cruiser suits the forest-edge campsites well; just remember that vehicle insurance does not cover rooftop tents and camping gear.
Vehicle Choice for the Nyungwe Region
The main road is paved, so a RAV4 can make the journey in dry weather. A Land Cruiser or Hilux is the better choice in the rainy seasons (March to May, October to November), on any side roads to lodges and trailheads, and for anyone adding a rooftop tent. Heavy mist and wet tarmac reward vehicles with good brakes, tyres, and ground clearance.
What Time Should You Arrive?
Chimpanzee treks begin very early, before or around sunrise, because the animals are easiest to find at first light. Confirm your reporting time and meeting point when you book your permit, then arrive the evening before so you are not driving mountain roads in the dark. Our contract does not allow driving after 7:00 pm or before 6:00 am, so an early reporting time makes sleeping near the forest essential.
Parking and Local Transport Considerations
Park in the designated area at the visitor center and lock the vehicle, leaving no valuables visible. Trekking is on foot with a ranger guide, often on steep, muddy forest trails, so bring waterproof layers and sturdy boots. If you would rather not drive the final forest stretch in the dark, ask us about adding a driver-guide for the Nyungwe leg.

We believe a price should be explained, not hidden. The vehicle rate depends on model, season, and length of hire and is stated in a written quotation. Everything below is published.
Daily Vehicle Rental
Quoted per vehicle and per season. Land Cruisers cost more than the RAV4; peak season (June to October and December to January) costs more than the green season.
Weekly Rental
A longer hire lowers the daily rate. Ask for a weekly rate on a seven-day trip.
Monthly Rental

Security Deposit
$500 where requested, refunded at the end of the trip (see below).
Insurance

It does not mean the cost of damage caused by breach of contract, nor can we promise an instant arrival in a remote forest.
