One-Way Car Rental from Nairobi: Drop-Off Across Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda

One-way car rental from Nairobi means you collect a vehicle in the capital and return it in a different town or country, so you never have to drive the same road twice. Car Rental 4×4 offers one-way drop-offs across Kenya, including Mombasa, Diani, Nakuru, Eldoret, Kisumu, and the main safari areas; and, with advance paperwork, in Arusha, Moshi, and Dar es Salaam in Tanzania; Entebbe, Kampala, and Jinja in Uganda; and Kigali in Rwanda. A one-way fee applies, cross-border trips need a letter of authority and regional insurance, and you should ask for the route you want at least a week in advance.

This One Way Car Rental from Nairobi page explains how one-way rental works, shows every drop-off and pick-up destination we can arrange, compares approximate distances, and links to our detailed guides for each place. It is built for travellers who are still planning, so the route advice is useful even if you are not ready to book. If you are choosing between circuits, our Kenya safari routes guide helps you pick the route first.

How One-Way Car Rental from Nairobi Works

You collect your vehicle in Nairobi, drive your chosen route, and leave the vehicle at an agreed office, hotel, or airport in your given destination town. Car rental 4×4 then returns the vehicle back to Nairobi, which is why a one-way fee usually applies. The fee reflects the cost of moving the car back, and it varies with the distance, the country, and the season.

  • You save time and fuel: no backtracking, and no wasted days returning to Nairobi.
  • You can combine places: a safari then a beach, or a road trip that ends in another country.
  • You keep control: you choose the vehicle, the route, and the pace, unlike a fixed tour.
  • You need a plan: the drop-off point, date, and time are agreed upon in advance and written into the rental agreement.

Who one-way rental suits

  • Safari and beach travelers heading from the parks to the coast.
  • Overland travelers crossing into Tanzania, Uganda, or Rwanda.
  • Business and relocation trips with a vehicle needed in another city.
  • Photographers and long-stay visitors who want a different start and end point.
  • Groups and families who want one vehicle for the whole journey.

The Rift Valley: Naivasha and Nakuru

A one-way drop in the Rift Valley suits travellers who want to finish near the lakes and continue north or west by other means. Naivasha is the closest, and it is described in our Naivasha travel guide and our guide to Naivasha town and region. Nakuru adds Lake Nakuru National Park and rhino viewing, which you can read about in our Nakuru travel guide and Lake Nakuru National Park travel guide.

Western Kenya: Eldoret and Kisumu

Eldoret and Kisumu suit trips that continue to Uganda or the Lake Victoria region. Our Eldoret travel guide covers Iten, the Kerio Valley, and onward routes, and our guide to one-way car rental Nairobi to Kisumu explains the western drop-off.

Safari parks: Maasai Mara, Amboseli, and Tsavo

You can also end a trip inside a safari area, for example, collecting in Nairobi and returning the vehicle near a park gate or airstrip hub. Read the Maasai Mara National Reserve travel guide, the Amboseli National Park travel guide and the Tsavo West National Park travel guide to choose a gate and a stay before you fix the drop-off point.

Central Kenya and the north: Nanyuki and Samburu

For Mount Kenya, Laikipia, and Samburu, a one-way drop in Nanyuki is the usual starting point, and our guide to one-way car rental Nairobi to Nanyuki explains the route and the roads beyond.

The coast: Mombasa, Diani, and Malindi

The coast is the most popular one-way destination. A typical journey runs from Nairobi through Tsavo to the coast, so travellers often stop in the parks on the way. See our guides to one-way car rental Nairobi to Mombasa, one-way car rental Nairobi to Diani and one-way car rental Nairobi to Malindi for route details, and use the Safari and Beach route in our Kenya safari routes guide to plan the stops.

One-Way Drop-Offs in Tanzania, Uganda, and Rwanda

A cross-border one-way rental needs more preparation than a domestic one, because the vehicle must be permitted to leave Kenya, the paperwork and insurance must cover the countries you enter, and the rental company must arrange to return the vehicle. Cross-border one-way car rental from Kenya depends on the fleet availability, the route, and the season, so we confirm each request individually.

Tanzania

Most travelers use Namanga to reach Arusha, then continue to Moshi or Kilimanjaro Airport. A longer route reaches Dar es Salaam, and from there travellers often take the ferry or a flight to Zanzibar, while the rental stays on the mainland. Our Tanzania safari routes guide shows the circuits you can build around an Arusha drop-off, and our guide to one-way car rental Nairobi to Arusha covers the crossing and the paperwork.

Uganda

One-way rentals from Nairobi to Uganda cross at Busia or Malaba and end in Jinja, Kampala, or Entebbe. Many travelers combine them with a safari in Kenya and a gorilla or chimpanzee trek in Uganda. See our Uganda safari routes guide for ideas and our guide to one-way car rental Nairobi to Kampala for the border and the drop-off options.

Rwanda

Rwanda has no border with Kenya, so a one-way drop in Kigali passes through Uganda. It is a long trip, which most travelers split over several days, and it is best planned together with the gorilla and Akagera options in our Rwanda safari routes guide. Our guide to one-way car rental from Nairobi to Kigali explains the route and the extra documents.

We do not offer one-way drop-offs in South Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia, Burundi, or the DR Congo. Any request outside Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Rwanda needs special assessment and written approval.

Pick-Up Destinations: Start Elsewhere and Finish in Nairobi

One-way rental also works in the other direction. You can collect a vehicle in another city and return it in Nairobi, which suits travellers who arrive in one country and fly out of Nairobi. The same rules about fees, notice, and permissions apply, and cross-border pick-ups depend on the vehicle’s registration and the fleet available.

Choosing the Right Vehicle for a One-Way Trip

A one-way trip is usually longer and more varied than a round trip, so the vehicle matters more. These are the options we recommend for each type of journey.

Trip type

Choose

Why

Independent road trip on mixed roads

A self-drive 4×4

Handles tarmac, murram, and park tracks. See our car rental Nairobi page

Wildlife viewing along the way

A safari vehicle with a pop-up roof

Everyone can stand and photograph from inside the vehicle.

Long days, borders, and park rules

A driver-guide

The guide handles navigation, gates, and paperwork and drives the long legs.

Camping on the road

Camping gear and rooftop tent rental

A rooftop tent and equipment make overnight stops cheap and flexible.

Three weeks or more

A long-term rental

Lower effective daily rate and paperwork that covers the full itinerary

A rooftop tent adds height and weight, so drive carefully under low branches and expect slightly higher fuel use.

One-Way Fees: What Affects the Price

One-way rentals are priced differently from round trips, and the fee is not a fixed amount. We give you an itemised quote before you pay, and the main factors are below.

Factor

How it affects the cost

Distance and country

Longer drops and cross-border drops cost more, because the vehicle must be driven or moved back

Season

Peak months, such as July to October and December to January, can raise the fee and reduce availability

Vehicle type

Larger and specially equipped vehicles, such as pop-up roof or rooftop tent vehicles, cost more to reposition

Rental length

Longer rentals can reduce the effective daily rate even when a one-way fee applies

Drop-off timing

Agreed return windows and out-of-hours drop-offs may carry extra charges

Cross-border paperwork

Letters of authority, regional insurance and permit support are quoted separately

Mileage

mileage is unlimited

Fuel and tolls

Not included, and you return the vehicle with the agreed fuel level

Damage and excess

The insurance excess applies as normal, and waivers may be void without a police report after an incident

Tip: if your dates are flexible, asking about shoulder-season rates and different drop-off towns can reduce the fee.

Documents and Permissions for Cross-Border One-Way Trips

A domestic one-way trip needs the usual rental documents, while a cross-border trip adds visas, insurance and vehicle paperwork. The details differ by country, so use this checklist and then read the relevant guide.

For you

  1. Passport valid for at least six months from your entry date.
  2. Visas or travel authorisations for each country on your route.
  3. Kenya eTA, and proof of Kenya’s mandatory inbound health insurance where it applies.
  4. Tanzania’s mandatory inbound travel insurance, if you enter Tanzania.
  5. Driving licence and International Driving Permit.
  6. Yellow fever vaccination certificate, which several borders and visa processes ask for.
  7. A credit card in the main driver’s name for the refundable deposit.

For the vehicle

  1. Letter of authority from Car Rental 4×4 naming every country, border post and date.
  2. Certified copy of the vehicle registration card (logbook).
  3. COMESA Yellow Card valid for each country on the route.
  4. Insurance extension covering the countries you will visit, including damage cover and waivers.
  5. Rental agreement that states the drop-off location, date, time and one-way fee.
  6. Temporary import and operation permits where a country requires them, which we arrange with you in advance.

Country

Key requirements to plan for

Kenya

eTA, mandatory inbound health insurance for most visitors, and temporary import and NTSA permits for foreign-registered cars

Tanzania

A Tanzanian e-visa (the East Africa Tourist Visa does not cover it) and USD 44 inbound travel insurance, valid up to 92 days

Uganda

An e-visa or the East Africa Tourist Visa, and a passenger locator form

Rwanda

A visa as required for your nationality, or the East Africa Tourist Visa, and right-hand driving

Guidance on whether home-country health insurance is accepted in Kenya has changed since the rule launched, so follow the official portal on the day you apply. For full details, see our cross-border car rental from Kenya guide.

Planning Tips for a Smooth One-Way Rental

  • Book early: at least a week before pick-up, and earlier in peak season or for cross-border drops.
  • Confirm the drop-off details in writing: the address, the date, the time window and who will meet you.
  • Plan the driving days: split long routes over several days, and avoid driving at night.
  • Check mileage and fuel rules so you are not surprised at the end.
  • Keep paperwork together: one folder for passports, permits, insurance and the rental agreement, with photos kept separately.
  • Allow a buffer before flights, particularly for cross-border drops or the Mombasa highway.
  • Compare other transport: the Nairobi–Mombasa train and domestic flights can suit part of a trip, with a vehicle for the rest.
  • Ask about luggage space and camping gear before you choose the vehicle.

Coast drops: the Nairobi to Mombasa road carries heavy trucks, so leave early, and avoid arriving in the dark.

Border days: cross as early in the day as possible, and keep your documents ready.

Return handover: photograph the vehicle at drop-off and keep the handover note.

Entry and Health Notices

East Africa is dealing with a large Ebola outbreak centred in the DR Congo, and several countries screen travellers at airports and borders. Safari areas are described as unaffected, but screening forms and temperature checks apply at some crossings, particularly Busia and Malaba, and Rwanda may refuse entry to anyone who has been in the DR Congo in the previous 30 days. Read current Ministry of Health and embassy notices before you book and again before you travel, and do not travel if you are unwell.
