Car rental Nairobi National Park: 4x4 self-drive or driver-guide
“4×4 hire and driver-guide vehicles for the wildlife park on the edge of Kenya’s capital: lion, rhino, and giraffe against the skyline, collected in Nairobi or at the airport, with the new mandatory travel health insurance explained“
At first light the city has not quite woken. A mist lies on the Athi plains, a lioness walks the murram track as if she owned the road, and beyond her, small and silver against the sky, an aircraft descends towards the airport. Nairobi National Park is the only protected wilderness in the world that borders a capital city, and from the moment the gates open at six, it is as wild as anywhere in Kenya.
It is also the easiest safari you will ever organize. The park lies about seven kilometers from the city center, a short drive from both airports, and it is open to private and rental vehicles. This page explains how car rental for Nairobi National Park works: which vehicle to choose, where to collect and return it, what the park charges, how the gates and roads work, how to spend a morning or a day, and what Kenya’s new health insurance rule means for your trip.
Car Rental Nairobi National Park at a Glance
Can you self-drive in Nairobi National Park? Yes. Private and rental vehicles are permitted on payment of the park and vehicle fees. Kenya drives on the left. Carry your home license, an International Driving Permit (strongly recommended), and your passport. New from October 2026: every foreign visitor to Kenya must hold Kenya’s mandatory inbound travel health insurance before arrival. See the section below. Best vehicle: a 4×4 with high clearance, such as a Land Cruiser or Hilux. In dry weather a RAV4 can manage the main roads. How far? The Main Gate is about 7 km from the city center, roughly 10 to 20 minutes from Wilson Airport and 30 to 45 minutes from JKIA. Park fees (non-residents): about USD 80 per adult and USD 40 per child per 24 hours, plus a vehicle fee, paid cashless in advance. [CONFIRM current tariff] Park hours: about 6:00 am to 6:00 pm. Before You Travel: Kenya's New Mandatory Travel Health Insurance
This requirement is new, and it affects every foreign visitor. From early October 2026, Kenya requires travelers to hold a government-designated inbound travel health insurance policy before they enter the country. It applies to tourists, business travelers, and anyone visiting for less than 12 months, and it is separate from your rental, your car insurance, and, according to current guidance, from the travel insurance you buy at home. Please read this section before you book flights.
Question | Answer (as of 19 October 2026) |
What is it? | Mandatory inbound travel health insurance for foreign visitors, based on Kenya’s Social Health Insurance Act of 2023 and a Ministry of Health notice published in July 2026 |
Who needs it? | Foreign visitors staying less than 12 months. Diplomats, crew, Kenyan residents, and transit passengers are reported as exempt. |
When did it start? | The rule took effect for new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) applications on 5 to 6 October 2026. |
What does it cost? | The policy costs about USD 44, is valid for one year, and covers repeat visits during that period, plus a small gateway fee of about USD 8 when purchased through the ETA system. |
Where do I buy it? | You can buy it through Kenya’s official ETA portal as part of your application, or in advance on the government’s eCitizen insurance page. Buy only from official government sites. |
I already have an approved ETA. Do I still need it? | Yes. Travellers who hold an approved ETA but have not bought the insurance must still buy it before arrival, and immigration may ask for proof. |
Will airlines check? | Airlines have been asked to check passengers’ policies before boarding, and travelers without insurance may be refused entry. |
Is my travel insurance enough? | Current guidance says no: the government policy is separate from private cover. Keep your own travel, medical, and evacuation insurance as well. |
Has the rule changed? | Yes, it has been challenged in court. A court suspended it in August 2026 and then dismissed the challenge in October, so the rule stands. Details are still being clarified. |
What to do: buy the policy on the official portal when you apply for your ETA, save the electronic certificate on your phone and a printed copy, and carry it with your passport. Please present it at the airport when requested.
This policy applies to your car rental. Our rental insurance covers the vehicle (collision and theft), not people. It does not provide medical or personal cover for you or your passengers. Kenya’s mandatory policy, your travel insurance, and our vehicle insurance are three separate things.
Insurance rules for visitors are changing quickly. Check the Kenyan government’s official ETA and eCitizen portals and your government’s travel advice before you travel. We cannot buy the policy on your behalf.
Can You Self-Drive in Nairobi National Park?
Yes. Nairobi National Park is a Kenya Wildlife Service park, and private vehicles are welcome on payment of the person fee and a vehicle fee. The park is compact, about 117 square kilometers, fenced on three sides, and open to the south so that wildlife can move onto the Athi-Kapiti plains. The roads are mostly murky and well signed.
Three points set Nairobi National Park apart from the other parks. It is close: you can be in the park within an hour of landing. It is short: a half-day drive of four to five hours covers the main circuits. And it is cashless: tickets are bought in advance online, and the gates do not take cash.
Who Can Rent a Car and Drive in Kenya?
Any hirer who holds a valid driving license, presents a passport, signs the rental agreement in person, and is named as a driver. Only named drivers may drive, and the vehicle may not be sublet. Minimum age and license-tenure requirements are stated in your written quotation.
What Documents Do You Need?
- Passport and valid Kenyan Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), if required for your nationality.
- Proof of Kenya’s mandatory inbound travel health insurance.
- A valid driving license from your home country; an international permit is also accepted.
- Booking confirmation and the signed rental agreement are required.
- Security deposit, where requested.
- Proof of payment for your park ticket.
- Your travel, medical, and life insurance. Our vehicle insurance does not cover personal injury.
Do You Need an International Driving Permit?
A valid license from your country of origin works best, and an International Driving Permit is also accepted. It is strongly recommended, is often requested by rental companies, and is required if your license is not in English or the Latin alphabet. Carry it alongside your license, never instead of it. Several sources say a valid English-language foreign license can be used by visitors for up to 90 days, but rules vary; check the National Transport and Safety Authority’s current requirements for longer stays.
What Is Car Rental for Nairobi National Park?
Car rental for Nairobi National Park means Car Rental 4×4 hires a fully equipped 4×4 car in Nairobi National Park for self-drive or with a professional driver-guide. The vehicle arrives serviced, insured, and explained. You choose the gate, the pace, and, within the rules, where to stop. The simplest way to see Kenya’s wildlife is during a morning game drive, a day trip, a layover between flights, or the first day of a longer safari. For longer trips, see our car rental Nairobi and self drive Nairobi pages.
Which Vehicle Should You Rent for Nairobi National Park?
4×4 Car Rental Kenya
Ground clearance and traction are the argument, especially if you plan to visit in or after the rains. The park roads are murram and black cotton soil: firm and dusty in the dry months, slippery and rutted in the wet. A 4×4 gives you grip and the confidence to continue when the track turns soft. See Car Rental Kenya and 4×4 Fleets.
Land Cruiser for Self-Drive
The land cruisers LX, V8, and Hardtop versions are the safari standard: strong, comfortable, and easy to service, with room for luggage and camping kit. Ideal if Nairobi National Park is the first stop of a longer trip.
Hilux Double Cab
Rugged and practical, with an open load bed for gear. A popular choice for confident drivers who want capability and simplicity.
RAV4 or Nissan X-Trail
In dry weather, a RAV4 can manage the main park roads and is comfortable in city traffic. It has the lowest excess of our 4×4 class ($500), but it is not recommended for wet conditions or soft tracks, and it cannot take a rooftop tent.
Pop-Up Roof Safari Vehicles
Car rental with a pop-up roof in Nairobi National Park lets you stand to photograph a rhino, lion, and giraffe. This feature is available on the Extended Land Cruiser, whether you choose self-drive or guided. See Car with Pop-Up Roof in Kenya. Stand inside the roof, never on top.

Car Rental With a Driver Guide at Nairobi National Park
For a first visitor, car rental with a driver guide for Nairobi National Park is the best way to find the park’s black rhino and big cats, particularly in the heat of the day when animals lie up in the riverine forest. What You Can See in Nairobi National Park
Nairobi National Park was established in 1946, and it protects a surprising variety of habitat: open grass plains, acacia woodland, rocky ridges, a riverine forest along the Athi, and permanent dams.
- Rhino: The park is one of Kenya’s best places to see black rhino in the wild, and white rhino are present too.
- Big cats: lion, leopard, and cheetah. Lions are most often seen on the open plains.
- Plains game: giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, eland, impala, and Thomson’s gazelle.
- Water and birds: hippo and crocodile in the pools and dams, and hundreds of bird species.
- Visitor sites: the Hippo Pools (where you may walk with rangers), the Impala Observation Point, picnic sites, an ivory burning site monument, and the Nairobi Safari Walk and Animal Orphanage near the Main Gate, which are charged separately.
Wildlife moves between the park and the open plains to the south, so sightings vary by day and season. Ask the gate staff where they have seen animals.
The Gates: Where to Enter Nairobi National Park
Gate | Where it is | Best for | Notes |
Main Gate (Langata Road) | About 7 km from the city center, close to Wilson Airport | Most visitors are the nearest gate to the city and the Safari Walk and Animal Orphanage. | Busiest from 6:00 to 8:00 am, especially at weekends |
East Gate (Airport Road) | Near Jomo Kenyatta International Airport | Visitors arriving from or heading to the airport | Often quieter than the Main Gate |
Maasai Gate (Athi River) | South-eastern side, near Athi River town | The more remote plains and southern boundary | Confirm with the park before you use |
Cheetah Gate and Banda Gate | Smaller gates on the park’s other sides | Visitors staying nearby | Confirm with the park before you use |
Choose your gate based on where you are collecting the vehicle and where you will sleep, and ask us which one suits your day. Gate procedures are cashless, so please purchase your ticket first.
Park Hours, Tickets, and Payment
- Hours: the park is open every day from about 6:00 am to 6:00 pm, and you must be out of the gate by closing time. Our rental agreement limits driving from 6:00 am to 7:00 pm.
- Tickets are cashless and bought in advance through the government’s park payment portal on eCitizen. Gates generally do not take cash. Keep proof of payment on your phone and a printed copy in the vehicle, because network coverage near the gates can be unreliable.
- A daily ticket is valid for a single entry and for no longer than 24 hours.
- Fees (non-residents, per 24 hours): about USD 80 per adult and USD 40 per child, with lower rates for Kenyan residents, East African citizens, and African citizens. A vehicle fee is charged per vehicle in addition to the daily ticket fee. [CONFIRM current tariff and vehicle fee]
- Charged separately: the Safari Walk, the Animal Orphanage, picnic sites, and special campsites.
- Carry your original passport or residency document. Without it, you may be charged the non-resident rate.
- Fees go to the park authority, not to us. They are separate from your rental price.
Nairobi National Park Rules Every Driver Must Know
The rules protect the wildlife and the landscape. Breaking them risks fines, ejection from the park, and, under our contract, loss of insurance cover.
- Stay on designated tracks. Off-road driving is prohibited and heavily penalized; our agreement sets a penalty of USD 150 per person in the vehicle.
- The speed limit inside the park is 40 km/h under our contract (an overspeeding penalty of USD 50 applies); always follow posted signs.
- Stay in your vehicle except at designated picnic and viewing points. Sitting on top of the vehicle carries a USD 100
- Give animals space. Keep your distance from rhinos, buffalo, and lions, and never block an animal’s path.
- No driving at night. Our vehicles are on the road only between 6:00 am and 7:00 pm, and the park closes at dusk.
- No feeding, calling, or harassing wildlife. Keep windows up and food out of sight from baboons.
- No single-use plastic, no drones without authorization, and take your litter with you.
Our insurance does not cover damage inside national parks, including collisions with wildlife, and off-track driving is excluded. See the insurance section.

The long rains fall roughly from March to May, and the short rains in November and December. In wet conditions, delay or shorten your day rather than push on. Rush hours in the city are roughly 7:00 to 9:00 am and 4:00 to 8:00 pm, so plan your drive to the gate around them.

How to Plan a Day at Nairobi National Park
A Half-Day Game Drive
Time | What to do |
5:30 to 6:30 am | Leave for the gate and be there when it opens. Tickets should already be paid. |
6:30 to 9:30 am | The best light and the most active wildlife will be seen. Drive the plains for lions and rhinos, then the riverine forest. |
9:30 to 11:00 am | The dams and hippo pools: a picnic stop at a designated site |
11:00 am | Leave the park and return to the city before the heat and the traffic. |
A Layover Safari
If you have a long layover in Nairobi, a half-day drive is possible: allow at least four to five hours of game driving, plus travel to and from the gate, and be back at the airport well before your check-in time. Keep your passport, onward ticket, and travel health insurance certificate with you. We can deliver the vehicle to the airport and collect it afterwards.
A Full Day
Start at dawn, break at midday at a picnic site or the Safari Walk, and return for an afternoon drive in the warm light. Be out of the gate by 6:00 pm.
Tips From the Road
- Switch off your engine at sightings; it steadies your camera and disturbs animals less.
- Never leave the vehicle except at designated points.
- Keep a full tank, extra water and snacks in the vehicle.
- Ask at the gate which tracks are open and where animals were seen.
- Be patient. Most great sightings come from slowing down.

Fuel and Mileage
Question | Answer |
Is mileage unlimited? | Yes. All hired vehicles come with unlimited kilometers. |
What fuel does each vehicle use? | Land Cruisers and Hilux are typically diesel; RAV4s are typically petrol. Please check the fuel cap label and confirm this at handover. |
How much fuel does it use? | Planning figures: about 8 to 10 L/100 km (RAV4 or X-trail); 12 to 15 L/100 km (Land Cruiser), more on rough tracks and in traffic. Estimates only |
Where can I refuel? | Fuel is plentiful in Nairobi and along the main highways. Do not rely on fuel inside or immediately beside a park. Use Total, Shell & Rubis fuel stations |
What is the fuel policy? | You pay for fuel and oil. No credit is given for unused fuel at return. |
Can I go to remote areas? | Yes, on designated routes, with a full tank and recovery kit |
What if I run out of fuel? | Call us; we will advise. Fuel and recovery costs caused by running dry are the hirer’s. |
What Happens If Your Rental Car Breaks Down?
Step | What happens |
1. Call | Please call or WhatsApp us right away. If you have no signal, ask a ranger or passing vehicle for help. |
2. Diagnosis | We establish what has happened and where you are. Do not arrange or undertake repairs yourself. |
3. Roadside assistance | Our rental includes 24/7 roadside assistance. We arrange for a mechanic to arrive within 12 hours. |
4. Recovery | If the vehicle cannot be repaired on the spot, we arrange recovery. |
5. Repair or replacement | If repair is not possible within a day, we provide a replacement vehicle (within 24 hours from base; within 48 hours across a border) or compensate for the lost day. |
6. Continuing | We cover the replacement car’s fuel and driver allowance; you pay fuel for returning the broken-down car. |
What support actually means. A person answers the phone, takes responsibility, and works to get you moving. It does not mean instant arrival on a remote road, and it does not cover damage from breach of the contract. Stay with your vehicle, stay calm, and keep clear of traffic and animals while you wait.

Frequently Asked Questions About Car Rental at Nairobi National Park
Can I rent a car for Nairobi National Park?
Yes. Car Rental 4×4 hires 4x4s from Nairobi and other points, with or without a driver-guide, and with pop-up roofs, rooftop tents, and camping kits.
Can I self-drive in Nairobi National Park?
Yes. The park allows private and rental vehicles on payment of the person fee and a vehicle fee, subject to park rules.
Is travel health insurance mandatory for Kenya?
Yes, from October 2026. Foreign visitors staying less than 12 months must hold Kenya’s government-designated inbound travel health insurance before arrival. It costs about USD 44, is valid for one year, and can be bought through the official ETA portal or eCitizen. Keep the certificate with your passport.
Can I use my travel insurance instead?
Current guidance says the government policy is separate from private insurance and must still be bought. Keep your own travel, medical, and evacuation cover too.
Does your car rental insurance cover me medically?
No. Our insurance covers the vehicle (collision and theft), subject to excess. It does not cover personal injury or medical costs.
What if I already have an approved ETA?
You must still buy the insurance before arrival, and immigration may ask for proof.
Do I need a 4×4 for Nairobi National Park?
In dry weather, a RAV4 can manage the main roads, but a 4×4 is recommended for soft ground and rain.

Your Nairobi National Park Journey, Handled
Somewhere ahead, past the last roundabout and the first gate, a white rhino lifts her head from the grass, and a jet crosses the sky above her. All that remains is for you to be there.
You have probably imagined this morning for longer than you will admit. The mist on the plains. The lioness on the track. The skyline behind her, small and silver. We have tried to make everything between that picture and the real thing as quiet and uneventful as possible, from the vehicle to the paperwork.
Every detail is handled. Your vehicle is waiting where you choose, at the airport, at your hotel or in town. It is prepared, serviced, and equipped. We tell you plainly what to prepare before you fly, including Kenya’s new insurance, and what to expect at the gate. Excess, deposit, park rules, and breakdown steps are explained in plain figures before you sign. If a warning light appears on a quiet track, someone answers.
No decision is made without careful consideration. All that remains is the part only you can do: to go.
When you are ready, let us know your travel dates, starting point, and destination. We will take it from there, gently and without obligation.
