Car Rental Tsavo West National Park
Car rental in Tsavo West National Park: 4×4 self-drive or driver-guide, pick-up in Nairobi, Voi, or Mombasa, park fees, gates, and insurance rules. Rent 4×4 hire and driver-guide vehicles for the rugged Tsavo West National Park, a scenic half of Kenya’s Tsavo wilderness: Mzima Springs, lava flows, and Kilimanjaro views, collected in Nairobi, Voi, or Mombasa, with the new mandatory travel health insurance explained.
Tsavo West National Park is the dramatic half of Kenya’s stunning Tsavo wilderness. Where Tsavo East National Park is flat and wide, Tsavo West National Park is rugged and varied: black lava flows, volcanic hills, rocky outcrops, and, in the middle of dry country, the crystal-clear pools of Mzima Springs, where hippos drift in water filtered through the Chyulu Hills. On a clear morning, Mount Kilimanjaro stands over the southern horizon. The park covers about 9,000 square kilometers, and it rewards the visitor who comes with the right vehicle and time to explore.
This page explains how car rental for Tsavo West National Park works: which vehicle to choose, where to collect and return it, what the park charges, how the gates and roads work, how to plan one day or several, and what Kenya’s new health insurance rule means for your trip.
Car Rental Tsavo West National Park at a Glance

Before You Travel: Kenya's New Mandatory Travel Health Insurance
This policy is new, and it affects every foreign visitor. From early October 2026, Kenya requires travelers to hold a government-designated inbound travel health insurance policy before they enter the country. It applies to tourists, business travelers, and anyone visiting for less than 12 months, and it is separate from your rental, your car insurance, and, according to current guidance, from the travel insurance you buy at home. Please read this section before you book flights.
Question | Answer (as of 19 October 2026) |
What is travel health insurance? | Mandatory inbound travel health insurance for foreign visitors, based on Kenya’s Social Health Insurance Act of 2023 and a Ministry of Health notice published in July 2026 |
Who needs travel health insurance? | Foreign visitors who stay for less than 12 months. Diplomats, crew, Kenyan residents, and transit passengers are reported as exempt. Some reports say travelers from ETA-exempt countries are exempt for now; others say it applies to all non-Kenyans. |
When did Travel Health Insurance start? | The rule took effect for new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) applications from 5 to 6 October 2026. |
What does the travel health insurance cost? | The policy costs about USD 44, is valid for one year, and covers repeat visits during that period, plus a small gateway fee of about USD 8 when purchased through the ETA system. |
Where do I buy the travel health insurance? | You can buy it through Kenya’s official ETA portal as part of your application, or in advance on the government’s eCitizen insurance page. Buy only from official government sites. |
I already have an approved ETA. Do I still need travel health insurance? | Yes. Travellers who hold an approved ETA but have not bought the insurance must still buy it before arrival, and immigration may ask for proof. |
Will airlines check the travel health insurance? | Airlines have been asked to check passengers’ policies before boarding, and travelers without insurance may be refused entry. |
Is my travel insurance enough? | Current guidance says no: the government policy is separate from private cover. Keep your own travel, medical, and evacuation insurance as well. |
Has the rule changed? | Yes, it has been challenged in court. A court suspended it in August 2026 and then dismissed the challenge in October, so the rule stands. Details are still being clarified. |
What to do: buy the policy on the official portal when you apply for your ETA, save the electronic certificate on your phone and a printed copy, and carry it with your passport. Please present it at the airport when requested.
How the policy relates to your car rental. Our rental insurance covers the vehicle (collision and theft), not people. It does not provide medical or personal cover for you or your passengers. Kenya’s mandatory policy, your travel insurance, and our vehicle insurance are three separate things.
Can You Self-Drive in Tsavo West National Park?
Yes. Tsavo West is a Kenya Wildlife Service park, and private vehicles are welcome on payment of the person fee and a vehicle fee. The main tracks are murram and rock, reasonably signed, and the park is more compact and more scenic than Tsavo East, so it suits self-drivers who like variety. Be aware that the bush is thicker here, so animals can be harder to spot, and the tracks are tougher on tires.
Three points set it apart. It is hilly and rocky, with lava stone that punishes tyres and soft tracks. It is closer to Nairobi than Tsavo East, with the main gate about 235 km away. And it is cashless: tickets are bought in advance online, and the gates do not take cash.
Who Can Rent a Car and Drive in Kenya?
Any hirer who holds a valid driving license, presents a passport, signs the rental agreement in person, and is named as a driver. Only named drivers may drive, and the vehicle may not be sublet. Minimum age and license-tenure requirements are stated in your written quotation.
What Documents Do You Need?
- Passport and valid Kenyan Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), where required for your nationality.
- Proof of Kenya’s mandatory inbound travel health insurance.
- A valid driving license from your home country; an international permit is also accepted.
- Booking confirmation and the signed rental agreement are required.
- Security deposit, where requested.
- Proof of payment for your park ticket.
- Your travel, medical, and life insurance. Our vehicle insurance does not cover personal injury.
Do You Need an International Driving Permit?
A valid license from your country of origin works best, and an International Driving Permit is also accepted. It is strongly recommended, is often requested by rental companies, and is required if your license is not in English or the Latin alphabet. Carry it alongside your license, never instead of it. Several sources say a valid English-language foreign license can be used by visitors for up to 90 days, but rules vary; check the National Transport and Safety Authority’s current requirements for longer stays.
What Is Car Rental for Tsavo West National Park?
Car rental in Tsavo West National Park means hiring a fully equipped 4×4 from Car Rental 4×4 and either driving it yourself or having a professional driver guide at the wheel. The vehicle arrives serviced, insured, and explained. You choose the gate, the pace, and, within the rules, where to stop. The simplest way to see Tsavo’s wild country is by taking a one-day loop to Mzima Springs and the lava flow, a two- or three-night safari, or a link between Nairobi, Amboseli, and the coast. For longer trips, see our car rental Nairobi and self drive Tsavo West pages.
Which Vehicle Should You Rent for Tsavo West National Park?
4×4 Car Rental Kenya
Ground clearance and strong tires are the argument. Tsavo West’s tracks climb through volcanic hills, cross lava stone, and drop into soft ground near the springs and rivers. They are firm in the dry months and slippery and rutted in the wet. A 4×4 gives you grip and the confidence to continue when the track turns rough. See Car Rental Kenya and 4×4 Fleets.
Land Cruiser for Self-Drive
The LX, V8, Prado, and GX versions are the safari standard: strong, comfortable, and easy to service, with room for luggage, water, and a camping kit. The best choice for Tsavo West’s rocky tracks.
Hilux Double Cab
Rugged and practical, with an open load bed for gear and extra water. A popular choice for confident drivers who want capability and simplicity.
RAV4
A RAV4 is comfortable on the highway, but we do not recommend it inside Tsavo West. The tracks are rocky and rutted, punctures are common on lava stone, and it cannot take a rooftop tent. It has the lowest excess in our 4×4 class ($500), but we recommend a Land Cruiser or Hilux for this park.
Pop-Up Roof Safari Vehicles
A pop-up roof lets you stand to photograph an elephant, a lion, and a giraffe in the thicker bush. This feature is available on the Extended Land Cruiser, whether you choose self-drive or guided. See Car with Pop-Up Roof in Kenya. Stand inside the roof, never on top.
